Long before Heaton Woods became a residential care home, it was already a place where people came to be cared for.
Heaton Hospital opened in the 1890s, founded by Homer W. Heaton in the hills above Montpelier. For generations, neighbors came here during some of life’s most vulnerable moments, trusting the people inside these walls to care for them. For many local families, it was also where life began — a place where countless babies were born and welcomed into the world.
When Heaton Hospital closed in 1968, it entered a new chapter. Nearly three decades later, it was renovated and reopened in 1995 as Heaton Woods.
Today, these halls are filled with everyday life. Elders have private rooms, familiar routines, meals shared around the table, gardens and porches to enjoy, and people who know their names, their stories, and the little things that make a day feel like their own.
So much has changed since the 1890s. But the heart of heaton woods has remained remarkably familiar.
For more than a century, people have come here to be cared for.
